Community Conversation

Mainstreaming on Main Street (MoMS) conducts an on-going conversation on overcoming the perceptual challenges associated with the inclusion of disabled professionals in the workplace.

Why have a conversation?:

The United States faces a shrinking labor pool due to an aging labor force. As more people leave the workforce the need for organizations to be inclusive of all qualified candidates becomes increasingly important. At the same time, the biggest barrier to the inclusion and advancement of disabled persons in the workforce are (unfounded) perceptions that disabled individuals are unable to do the work and that the costs of accommodations will be prohibitive.

What are Community Conversations?:

MoMS Community Conversations are facilitated discussions designed to exchange ideas, experiences and insights regarding the inclusion of professionally qualified persons in the workplace. A major feature of these conversations is the fact they are intended to allow participants to explore their own perspectives outside of the context of employment law. Participants are encouraged to express their own perceptions while being open to the perspectives of others.

Who should attend?:

– Non-disabled persons who currently work in a professional setting but have little experience working with disabled cohorts.
– Experienced professionals who identify themselves as having a disability.
– Persons who currently work in a professional setting which includes both disabled and nondisabled cohorts.

Note: While all are welcome to participate in MoMS community conversations, it is expected all participants will speak from their own experiences and speak only on behalf of themselves.
