MoMS Connector’s Table Series

This Fall, Mainstreaming on Main Street (MoMS) will begin a series of first-person conversations for persons with disabilities (PWD) and our allies on topics of disability and community engagement.  The roundtables are titled “MoMS Connectors Tables” to reflect the wisdom participants bring to the table and the importance of connection in building community.

The monthly roundtable conversations will focus on topics affecting PWD and how we engage with the community around us.  Each roundtable will begin with a brief overview of a specific topic, followed by a roundtable conversation regarding the topic and how it is experienced in the lives of the roundtable participants.

This series will begin on October 18 and will continue on the third Tuesday of each month into the spring.  The series will take place at the Vision Forward Association campus located as 912 Norht Hawley Rd, Milwaukee from 6:30 – 8:00 PM.

The first roundtable will focus on models of disability, the variety of lenses through which disability can be viewed.  These models provide a framework for policies, attitudes, and treatment of PWD.  Future roundtables will include:  micro-aggressions and marginalization; the ADA – rights and responsibilities; disclosing disability/coming out as disabled; fixing, helping, and serving;  Talking about disability – wholeness and brokenness; and building a team – consuming/collaborating.

All roundtables are open to PWD and PWD allies.  As a first-person conversation, all participants are asked to speak on behalf of themselves, from their own experiences.  An underlying tenant of the roundtables is “We are each of us broken, and yet, we are all whole persons.”
