At the heart of Mainstreaming on Main Street® is a paradox:
- Over 70% of employers do not understand how persons with disabilities (PWD) could do the work of their organization
- 85% of employers who contact the Job Accommodation Network (JAN), do so in order to retain or promote a current employee
A major problem is a lack of adequate organizational infrastructure to support the inclusion of qualified employees. Ignoring this paradox leaves organizations at a competitive disadvantage: They are less likely to be able to retain qualified employees after the onset of a disabling condition and they are unlikely to be able to attract qualified employees who are among the 20% of Americans with Disabilities.
