Connectors Table series: Exploring our relationship with disability

MoMS Connectors Table: Exploring our relationship with disability

We regularly encounter disability: in public spaces, at our workplaces, where we worship, where we play, in our own homes, and sometimes in our own bodies. The conversations we have (or not) determine how we see disability and people with disabilities as a part of our community and economic life. The Mainstreaming on Main Street (MoMS) Connectors Table series starting Tuesday, September 19 will explore our relationship with disability through first-person, facilitated, conversations.

Who: All roundtables are open to everyone. The roundtable conversations may be of special interest to: employers, HR professionals, professionals with a disabling condition, PWD allies, and disability service providers. As a first-person conversation, all participants are asked to speak on behalf of themselves, from their own experiences.

When: The MoMS Connectors Tables series will begin on Tuesday, September 19 from 7:00 – 8:30 PM. The series will continue through May, 2018.

Conversation topics: Each connectors table starts with a brief introduction to frame the conversation. The direction of the conversation is guided by the experiences of the participant’s. Featured topics:
– [ ] Models of disability
– [ ] Talking about disability: wholeness and brokenness
– [ ] Micro-aggressions and marginalization
– [ ] Fixing, helping, serving
– [ ] Disclosing disability/coming out as a person with a disability
– [ ] Disability archetypes: super heroes, victims, and saviors
– [ ] Building a team: consuming/collaborating

An underlying tenant of the roundtables is “We are each of us broken, and yet, we are all whole persons.”
